If you asked me two years ago, I would have told you that I'm a great listener! I love to hear what people have to say, I ask questions that get them to tell me more, I'm genuinely invested in what they are telling me.
I also would have told you that I relate to people extremely well - when someone tells me something that resonants with me or an experience I've had, I can share that experience and we find common ground.
That sounds great, right? Unfortunately, that type of listening is not what coaching clients need.
Below are some listening reminders that I plan to follow as I build relationships with my clients:
Making room for mindfulness and presence while listening and communicating with clients is critical.
I must forget my own experiences - the client's experience is the only one in the room that matters.
Continuing to summarize, reframe, and check for accuracy will ensure we are moving toward a common goal.
Remaining empathetic and listening with an open heart will build trust and intimacy with clients.
Creating space through time, silence, and warmth is the key to helping guide clients toward future possibilities.
Becoming a great listener won't happen overnight, but remembering and practicing the key lessons above is a great place to start.
